This past week has seen an improvement in catches compared to the previous two weeks. Had it not been for adverse weather conditions and a number of lost fish we would likely have had a few more fish in the book.
For most of week gale-force winds dominated, making casting and water coverage challenging at best. We also had two lifts in water levels after heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday with the river peaking on Thursday morning at 24 inches. This lift definitely pushed fresh fish through the system to the upper beats with nearly all the action from beat 9 upwards.
It didn't take long for the first salmon of the week to be caught. Nicholas Oughtred landed his first ever Thurso salmon from the Stall pool on beat 11 which weighed 10 pounds by 10.30am on Monday.
Ollie Braithwaite enjoyed his first experience of the Thurso landing a beautiful 13-pounder from James Macdonalds on beat 9. And Jerry Oddie caught one of 10 pounds from the weedy pool on beat 13.
This week has seen thousands of Greylag geese passing over on their northern migration for the summer, the first sand martins appeared on Friday and one lucky guest got a close up view of a osprey catching his lunch on beat 3.
So what can we expect next week? hopefully a few more fish provided both water levels and the weather remain settled.
Tight lines next week.
