The 2024 angling season got underway on Thursday morning. Piper Alasdair Miller led anglers and friends of the river from the Ulbster Arms Hotel down to the Comlifoot pool on beat 4. After a quick toast to the river John Graham cast the first fly of the year. 

The opening day dinner was held the previous evening at the Ulbster Arms Hotel. John Graham gave a speech about his many years coming the Thurso. Having fishing many locations around the world John was firm in his belief that the Thurso is the best fishing location in the world and always looks forward to his visits to this little piece of paradise in the far north of Scotland.   

After many weeks of high water it was great to see the river settled back to a nice level for for the opening day. A light breeze and some dappled sunlight made it feel pleasant and not too cold. A good number of anglers headed out to enjoy a cast but no opening day springer was to be had.
