This past week mirrored the last, with the continued dry weather presenting a significant challenge for our anglers. The unseasonable warm temperatures, peaking in the low 20s coupled with clear skies made enticing a fish very difficult indeed. Like many others across the country we are all wondering when this prolonged dry spell will end.
However, as any experienced salmon angler knows always expect the unexpected. And just when it looked like another fishless week Mark Newton proved this point. Late on Saturday afternoon Mark successfully landed a fish of 7-pound from the Cruives eye on Beat 10, using light tackle and a micro hitch tube, Mark was understandably delighted with his hard earned reward.
Despite the current spell of slow fishing the month of May is a truly beautiful time to enjoy the banks of the Thurso. The banks are vibrant with new life, wild flowers blooming daily, mallard ducks and their newly hatched chicks are a common sight up and down the river. The ospreys are never far away and the call of the oystercatchers and curlew are just a handful of sights and sounds that make each day on the river a pleasure.
