On Monday morning all eyes were on storm Floris and the how much rain it would bring. While we did get enough rain to see a decent lift in levels the wind was the biggest impact of this storm with gusts up to 82mph recorded. Thankfully damage was minimal with trees blocking a few minor roads.
By Tuesday lunchtime the river peaked at 12 inches on the Halkirk gauge, unfortunately the lower beats in particular were dirty and wouldn't clear until Wednesday. As the week progressed new fish arrived from the sea and resident fish relocated which defiantly help bring the river to life. We can be pleased with the catches this week although the feeling was it could of been more, but at times the fish still proved reluctant to take.
Freddy Sutherland got the week up and running with an 8-pounder from beat 3, Freddy would add another two to his total for the week. Ken McGeorge also landed three, with his beat an 11-pounder from beat 3. Ian Adams picked up a brace, Pat Nicol had 5 in two days and Colin Macleod was rewarded for his one day visit with a brace of grilse from beat 2.
Dr Mike Leach as usual did not disappoint with six to his own rod with the best a fish of 13-pound. Patrick Walker landed his first Thurso salmon, a beautiful thick set 12-pounder from on beat 4. Brian Elmslie, Denis Lyons, Lana Richardson, Graham Walker and Gary Hendry all adding a fish to the final tally.
While we didn't get the big spate we hoped for this latest rise as helped reshuffle the pack with fresh fish through to beat 9. Looking ahead next week is expected to be warm initially cooler days and nights are forecast as we head towards next weekend.
Tight lines next week.
