This week has seen the same number of fish caught as the previous three weeks combined with 20 fish in the book. It may only be scratching the surface of what the river could be capable with some extra fresh water but without a doubt a very encouraging week indeed.
Looking at the reasons for the increase of activity a big change in temperatures has been the driving force, last Saturday the water temperature was a very uncomfortable 70 Fahrenheit, move forward a few days and by Tuesday this week it was down to a rather cooler 54 Fahrenheit. A constant cool northerly wind with the air temperatures averaging 12c during the day and as low as 3 at night made it feel very autumnal, last week it was more about what factor of suntan lotion was required, this week was more about how many extra layers of clothing was needed.
While catching any salmon is a memorable experience Steven Ritchie had a first trip to the Thurso to remember. Steven won a charity auction donated from the river Thurso to the Anglers against Covid-19 charity which has raised an astonishing amount of money to help the outstanding staff of the nhs.
Fishing the run out of Jamie Sutherland's on Friday morning steven hooked, played and landed a fish estimated in the 30 pound region, what a memorable first visit to the Thurso. To see a short clip of the fish being released go to the link below.
Tight lines and safe travels to all visiting us next week.
