This past week saw an improvement in catches thanks to a small lift in river levels on Monday and strong winds on Thursday and Friday. With 3.5 inches on the Halkirk gauge on Monday morning there was a definite sense of anticipation that it would wake a few residents up and pull a few new fish into the lower beats, unfortunately the overhead conditions did not prove helpful with bright skies and light winds but finally on Thursday some good cloud cover and strong wind cumulated with 8 salmon and grilse in the book, our best day since late June.
David Polson got our week up and running first thing on Monday with an 8 pounder from beat 7. Basil Tower had a successful first trip to the Thurso taking three in two days from beats 2 and 3. Titch Turner and his team from Wales had four fish with Steve Rigby(15 pounds, beat 9) Steve Stranks (10 pounds, beat 4) and Roy Maddox( 5 pounds, beat 2) all catching their first Thurso salmon. Miss Victoria Tomlin also broke her Thurso duck with a grilse from beat 4 and Lewis Medley had a 10 pounder from beat 3 on Saturday. The most remarkable catch this week and indeed the past 3 months was Oliver, Ed and Peter Saxby sharing six salmon and grilse between them on Friday from beat 2.
So next week will be our final full week of the season and with some wet weather forecast and some cooler nights it would be nice to end on a high.
Tight lines next week.
