The new season begins.

The new season opened on Tuesday morning (January 11th) under clear blue skies with a gentle breeze and a little crunchy underfoot thanks to an overnight frost. It was one of the nicest opening days for a few years.

At 10 am piper Alasdair Miller lead the assembled group of Anglers, ghillies and friends of the River Thurso from the Ulbster Arms down to the Comlifoot pool on beat 4. Alan Youngson gave words of encouragement about how healthy the Thurso is before toasting the river and inviting Yorkshire businessman Richard Medley to cast the first fly of the year. Once the ceremony was over everyone returned to the rod rooms for a warming cup of tea and a bacon roll along with some friendly banter about all things salmon angling.

All we can do now is keep our fingers crossed for a more balanced year of steady water levels and as with the start of any new season there is still that feeling of excitement and anticipation for the season ahead and that is what salmon angling should be all about.

All the ghillies and also the staff of the Ulbster Arms Hotel look forward to seeing both regular and new anglers visiting the Thurso this year and wish you all tight lines.
