A new season begins.
On Friday morning piper Alister Miller led the assembled company down to the comlifoot pool on beat 4. Senior ghillie Geordie Doull gave the toast to the river and invited Angus Oughtred to cast the first fly of the season.
The first day of the new season was blessed with light winds and periods of warming winter sunshine.
A few well mended kelts were caught but no sign of that early January Springer, yet!
The day was rounded of that evening with the opening day dinner in the Ulbster arms, Angus Oughtred gave a heart warming speech of his family's long history with Thurso and how the the river, the people and the stunning caithness scenery make the banks of the river Thurso a very special place to visit.
Looking ahead to the new season and trying to predict what the next 9 months will bring would require a crystal ball !! A nice steady season with sensible water condition would be nice after the prolonged drought in 2018.
One thing is for sure, if we have water we will catch fish.
The river Thurso team would like to wish all anglers tight lines for 2019 and we look forward to seeing both regular a new visitors on the river this year
