Weekly Report

Below is the weekly report for Sunday, June 12, 2022

The first two days of the week looked promising with 9 fish in the book, then the dreaded northeast wind and long periods of sunshine knocked the fishing back and with air temperatures often colder than the water this just made it more difficult to tempt the fish into taking.

John Grieve landed our first of the week with a fresh 13-pounder from the Braal pool on beat 4, this was quickly followed by Kevin Reid landing his first Thurso salmon (10 pounds) on only his tenth cast on his first days fishing the river, his fishing companion Peter Bowling made his second trip in as many weeks was also in on the action on beat 2 landing a fresh 12 pounder. On Tuesday morning after an epic battle, Steve Drury landed a 15-pounder from the rock pool on beat 9, not to be outdone Hilary Drury took a 16-pounder after lunch from Jamie Sutherlands, and day to remember for them both.

Denver Todd had a brace of salmon from beat 9 on Wednesday (8 & 10 pounds), John Grieve put a further two in the book from beat 13 both taken on the hitched fly, the first taken this season on this very popular tactic. Thurso regulars Mike Leach and Freddie Sutherland made a three-day visit with Freddie taking one salmon (10 pounds) and Mike adding three, one from beat 2 and two from beat 13.

The bulk of the catch is still salmon generally in the 8 to 15-pound region but we are seeing more grilse arriving daily with fresh ones right up at beat 13. There also seems to be a few larger salmon in the estuary awaiting some decent rainfall but with the largest tides of the month later in the week a few could make their way into the lower beats.

Tight lines next week.
