First of all the river Thurso team would like wish everyone a happy new year and tight lines for the upcoming season, we look forward to seeing both familar and new faces on the banks of the Thurso in 2020.
This time next week our fishing season will be up and running, what will 2020 bring, well no one can predict what will happen as regards to weather, but what we do know is that our runs of returning adult salmon continue to be strong, our river system is in a very healthy condition and our juvenile population is one of the best in the entire country. much like the weather, there are many things affecting salmon populations that are out of our control.
Water levels have settled back to its lowest level since mid september after an unusually mild and dry spell over the festive period, with air temperatures well in to double figures. kelts are already being sighted splashing around the slower pools and seem to be numourus which is a good sign of successful spawning up and down the entire river.
Hopefully this time next week we have a springer to report, and with the pass at loch more dry for the time being there is every chance of a fresh 2020 model lying in the upper river.
