A new season approaches!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year and hope that you are looking forward to a new fishing season.
The first day of the season will soon be upon us and rods will be out looking for that elusive first springer of the season! Since the season closed we have had a lot of rain, and a number of large spates. Because of the rain it has been difficult to get a really good indication of the spawning. When the river did drop for a short while, we did visit a number of sites and it was very encouraging to see good numbers of fish on the redds. It always amazes me that some of the fish we see spawning have been in the river for 7 months or more without anything to sustain them apart from the urge to spawn and complete their life-cycle, a truly wonderful fish.
What will 2018 bring us? We are in a fortunate position and we must not forget this. The Thurso River is healthy, we have a good stock of young fish and we have seen our 10 year average rise most years for the last 10 years. And much to my wife's displeasure we have had a succession of wet summers! Will all parts of the equation come together and give us a memorable season? We shall see!
So tight lines to you all and to all those visiting us later in the year we all look forward to seeing you.
Happy new year Tim Hawes.
